1. All I see…

    image

The women lounge on their sides looking at us from outer space.

Because they are looking at me, I feel far away, like the sea or the sun. From this vantage point, I see that some bodies are to be left alone.

My response to Vicky Shick’s Everything You See in The Performance Club.

  2. SELF MADE MAN MAN MADE LAND, a response

    image

To be in the body and feel each pose reaching and swelling. This is another way to say that women are sprawling, exploratory beings.

My response to Ursula Eagly’s SELF MADE MAN MAN MADE LAND in Idiom.

    Gertrude Stein
once said in a radio interview: “if you enjoy it, you understand it.” I return to this statement every now and again, like a lucky charm. I have fully convinced myself of its truth. And yet, every so often I see a performance in which understanding (of the old-fashioned sort) and enjoying have a more complicated relationship…

My review of Big Dance Theater’s Ich, Kürbisgeist in The Performance Club.

  6. Countering Mythology: Nora Chipaumire’s ‘Miriam’

    “Dear Miriam,

    Memory is a dark place.”

My response to Nora Chipaumire’s Miriam in Idiom.

  7. Queer Spectacle: Jennifer Miller and Circus Amok

The circus aesthetic is born in a queer world from queer artists and disrupts the normative at every turn. The lady with the beard is the ringleader and not in the sideshow … a bridge into this magical world.

—Jennifer Miller, Founder and Director of Circus Amok

“Is it possible for me to be nostalgic for a time I didn’t live through?”

My piece on Circus Amok in Hyperallergic Weekend.

  8. After Paradise

“Never have I had these words said to me during a performance. Never have I been so inclined to obey…”

My response to Yanira Castro | a canary torsi ‘s Paradis in Idiom.

  9. Queer Expectations

“What’s queer about milk? What’s queer about walking over a man lying beneath a sheet of Plexiglas? What’s queer about this? What’s queer about that? Milk is not particularly queer.”

My response to Queer New York International Arts Festival in The Brooklyn Rail.

  10. Intimate Gatherings

“Seeing Vicky Shick dance is like happening upon a beautiful secret….”

My response to Maura Nguygen Donohue, Juliette Mapp, and Vicky Shick at LaMaMa Moves! Dance Festival in The Brooklyn Rail.
